As you’ll know (if you’ve read my other beer ratings) I quite like a stout from time to time. This is one, and South African, no less – but I’ll try really hard not to hold that against it.
Fairly plain 340ml brown glass bottle.
Pours very nice. Very rich dark brown. Nice solid caramel coloured head, departs to leave a friendly ring.
Slightly metallic tang on first sip through the head, which made me apprehensive, but this quickly disappeared leaving me with really quite a nice beer. Slightly sweet. Woody. Perhaps a little chocolate. Creamy mouthfeel.
It looks like a stout, but has a smaller flavour (though still good) than I’d usually expect. Doesn’t taste of the claimed 6.0% ABV.
Probably a good introduction to stout for people who haven’t developed the taste, though they’d be a little shocked to then move up to a ‘real’ one.
Would get this one again, no question.
